Admit it, guys. Now that you are probably working from home most of the time, it is likely that you are not shaving consistently as before. Truth be told, I found myself only shaving these days when I need to attend meetings (physically or virtually). Or when I am going for the rare events that are taking place.
So by the time the Gillette MVP Razor review unit rolled into my table, my moustache and goatee has grown to rival that of Borat (ok, I am exaggerating).
PRICE: $64.90, available in Lazada and Shopee
WEIGHT: 51g (razor); 131g (magnetic stand)
But what’s so special about the new Gillette MVP Razor? It is the first gold metal handle limited edition MVP razor in Singapore. Its MVP moniker means most valuable player, and our very own Singaporean professional gamer Daryl Koh or “IceIceIce” is the ambassador of this particular razor.
This razor is really as sleek as it gets. Said to be inspired by esports, its design is not seen from Gillette’s usual razors. It comes with a golden metallic handle and has its own two-tone white/gold magnetic stand. Finally, no more randomly placing the razor inside my bathroom cabinet.
Gillette says it is like a golden sceptre with an accompany stand that makes one feel like a champion when shaving. Despite the marketing talk, I find it frankly to be really cool to have a golden white razor on a golden white stand.
Otherwise, this MVP Razor is still equipped with Gillette’s signature FlexBall technology that helps to make contact over contours smoothly. It also comes with the latest SkinGuard technology designed to prevent tug and pull as well as minimising skin irritation.
In addition, there are “Double-Lubrastrips” that offer lubrication before and after the blades move over your face for a smooth shave.
There is no charging required unlike the Gillette Labs Heated Razor I reviewed earlier this year. All you need to do is to remove the MVP Razor from the box, remove the plastic cap of the blade and you are ready to use it.
+ Sleek looks
+ Smooth shaving performance
+ Useful magnetic stand
– Not cheap
– Metallic handle is a smudge magnet
The handle’s golden part is nice to touch, but it is a smudge and fingerprint magnet. However, I like that that is a thumb rest that lets you hold the razor ergonomically.
I also like the magnetic stand. It is easy to magnetically attach and detach the razor from the stand. It also means the blade will not be sitting on water of my water basin after every shave like my usual razor. This is usually how the razor blades get rusty.
Only rinsing my face with water, using the MVP Razor to shave is as smooth as silk from the first moment the blades touch my face.
It was able to cleanly remove most of my out-of-whack moustache and unkempt goatee on the first shave. Subsequently shaves are only needed to remove tiny remnants of my facial hair.
Priced at S$64.90, the Gillette MVP Razor is a bit expensive. A “normal” Gillette Fusion5 Starter Pack is S$29.90 and comes with four blades.
That said, you will not be getting the sleek looks and premium feel of MVP Razor. So, if you are willing to pay a bit extra for it, this razor will not disappoint.
