For those who subscribe to Apple Music, you will be happy to know that it has been updated to support Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos as well as Lossless Audio.
As long as you are on the latest version of iOS 14, you will be able to access Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio.
According to Apple, Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos gives artists the opportunity to create immersive audio experiences for their fans with true multi-dimensional sound and clarity that comes from all around and from above the listener.
This setting is set to Automatic by default. But you can turn it off or change it to Always On. To change, go to Settings > Music > Dolby Atmos.
If you switch to Always On, the stereo quality of your headphones will be replaced even if it does not support Dolby Atmos.
But if you leave it to Automatic, you only get Dolby Atmos quality when you are using Apple and Beats headphones. So, it is up to you if you want to change the setting.
Apple uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) for Apple Music. ALAC is said to preserve every single bit of the original audio file. This means you will be able to hear your favourite songs exactly the way the artists created them in the studio.
And Apple is making Apple Music’s catalog of more than 75 million songs available to subscribers in ALAC.
To change the your music to Lossless Audio, go to Settings > Music > Audio Quality. Tap on the toggle to green to turn on Lossless Audio.
Here, you can also choose different resolutions for different connections such as mobile data, Wi-Fi, or for download.
Under Mobile Data Streaming, Wi-Fi Streaming, and Downloads, you can select the audio quality that you want. Lossless starts at up to 24-bit/48kHz, while High-Resolution Lossless goes up to 24-bit/192kHz.
As you might expect, choosing a lossless quality for mobile data streaming will use up more data. So you might want to take note of that, especially if your data plan does not have that much capacity.
You might also want to know that if you want to download the ALAC version of the songs you purchased, you have to delete the original first and re-download them in ALAC. If not, it will still play the original non-lossless version.
