First look: Apple’s Green iPhone 13 mini and Alpine Green iPhone 13 Pro

Earlier this week, Apple announced new green colour option for its iPhone 13 series during its “Peek Performance” livestream event. Apple calls the new green colour in iPhone 13 and 13 mini “Green”, while the new green colour in iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max “Alpine Green”.

If you, like us, are wondering why, you really have to see the phones for yourself to understand why. We realised that when we managed to take a look at a Green iPhone 13 mini and an Alpine Green iPhone 13 Pro.

According to Apple, the new Alpine Green rear is “created using multiple layers of nanometre-scale metallic ceramics applied across the surface”. However, all we can see is that this colour is close to the Midnight Green colour of iPhone 11 Pro series.

Like the Sierra Blue colour of the iPhone 13 Pro, this Alpine Green rear “changes” into different shades of green depending on the angle of the light. It can go from the faintest green to a darker green by simply tilting the phone. At times, it even seems grey-ish.

Its texture matte back glass continues to resist smudges and fingerprints. The stainless steel band comes in colour-matching shade of green. But the band does not “change” colour, and it is shiner as well as more of a fingerprint magnet.

On the other hand, the Green iPhone 13 mini has a colour matching aluminium frame and a precision-milled back glass. This green rear is much darker than the Alpine Green of the 13 Pro series.

Looking at this green, we can understand why Apple has decided to have a different naming convention. It does not “change” colour regardless of the angle you tilt the phone. It remains consistently dark.

If you compare the Green iPhone 12 and the Green iPhone 13, you can really see the difference in the darkness of the green.

Otherwise, the Green iPhone 13 series and the Alpine Green iPhone 13 Pro series are still the same smartphones as last year’s iPhone 13 respective models. You can read our review about the iPhone 13 series here.

At the same time, Apple has launchd new Eucalyptus silicone cases with MagSafe for the new green iPhones. These new cases look a lighter shade of green compared to the current Clover option. But you will be covering the sleek rear of these green iPhones.

You can pre-order the Green iPhone 13 series and Alpine Green iPhone 13 Pro series on Apple Store now. These new green-coloured iPhone 13 models will be available next Friday, Mar 18.

Somehow, we think many purple colour lovers will be screaming about the lack of a purple option in the iPhone 13 series. This is especially so when last year’s purple iPhone 12 proved to be quite popular. Maybe green is the new purple?
