Logitech Signature M650 Review: The silent mouse you never know you need

Whether you are working from home or back in office working, you probably are sitting in front of your computer with a mouse on one hand reading this right now.

In fact, chances are you will be holding the computer mouse for a longer period of time than the hand of your significant other. As such, it is imperative to get a good mouse like the Logitech Signature M650.

SPECS
PRICE: S$49, available in Lazada and Shopee
CONNECTIVITY: Bluetooth LE, USB Bolt receiver (2.4GHz wireless)
WEIGHT: 101.2g (M); 111.2g (L, version reviewed)

This is a wireless-only mouse that connects to your computer via either Bluetooth or Logitech Bolt USB dongle (2.4GHz wireless).

DESIGN
The M650 comes in two sizes of regular and large. And there are three colour options of rose (pink), graphite (black) and off-white (err, just white) to choose from.

Regardless of the sizing and colour, the price is the same at S$49. You can decide which size is better for you with this sizing guide (see below) from Logitech. For this review, I used the large off-white model.

The M650 features a symmetrical design with the regular left and right click buttons with the SmartWheel scroll wheel in the middle. There are two side buttons on its left that are the forward and back buttons by default.

However, Logitech also has a left-handed option in large size with the side buttons on the right side of the mouse instead.

At its bottom, you will find a power switch and a pairing button. Here, slide down the bottom cover to reveal the compartment that houses the battery and Logitech Bolt USB dongle.

PERFORMANCE
Regardless, the M650 sports curvy sides with rubber grips and a bigger bulge at its rear. As such, it is very ergonomic and nice to hold with your palm comfortably resting on the rear bulge.

Like the Razer Pro Click Mini recently reviewed, the M650 also features silent clicking. According to Logitech, its exclusive SilentTouch technology is supposed to reduce clicking sound by 90%.

And the M650 seriously does not make a sound when you are clicking on its main click buttons. Your colleagues in the office or the person next to you in the cafe will not know you are clicking furiously to create the presentation slides that your boss wants immediately.

FOR
+ Affordable
+ Available in two sizes
+ Silent click
+ Smart scroll wheel
+ Very long battery life

AGAINST
– Cannot be connected to multiple devices
– No wired connectivity

Even the SmartWheel scroll wheel does not make a sound when used. Plus, it works as advertised. It intelligently switches modes based on the motion of your finger. When you are looking at your spreadsheet diligently, you can slowly scroll down to get line-by-line precision. But when you need to get to the top of the spreadsheet, you can flip the scroll wheel to quickly get back up.

However, the side buttons do make a more audible click when pressed. But it is not loud enough to cause any ruckus.

Not to mention, all the five buttons of the mouse are programmable using the Logitech Option+ app. It allows you to use the side buttons together with the scroll wheel to scroll horizontally. You can also customise the middle button, aka the scroll wheel, for other functions such as activating Mission Control in macOS.

On the downside, the M650 does not support pairings to multiple devices at the same time. This is something its illustrious cousins MX Master 3 (S$169, available in Shopee) or MX Anywhere 3 (S$139, available in Shopee) can do. But given M650’s much more affordable price tag, it is easy to forgive the lack of this feature.

BATTERY LIFE
The M650 runs on a single AA battery, which is included. And a fully-charged AA battery is said to last the mouse for two years.

I will tell you if this is true after using it for two years. But for now, I have been using the mouse for two weeks and its battery level stays at 100%. So, you can expect this mouse to last for a while.

VERDICT
If you hate silent clicking and have the need to pair one mouse to multiple devices, this is not the mouse for you. For the rest of us, the Logitech Signature M650 is a superb wireless mouse to get with its affordable price tag, long battery life and overall great performance.
